North Atlantic Announces Green Energy Hub to Support Projects and Stimulate Growth in the Placentia Bay and Trinity Bay Region

The North Atlantic Green Energy Hub will be home to the company’s wind-to-hydrogen project

ST. JOHN’S, NL, July 23, 2024 – North Atlantic has launched its Green Energy Hub to stimulate growth and advance export-oriented projects in the green energy and low-carbon sector in the Placentia Bay and Trinity Bay region.

North Atlantic’s Green Energy Hub will leverage one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most heavily industrialized areas to:

  • Develop, advance and execute green hydrogen projects and export the products they produce.
  • Foster research and training opportunities that will be available for the participants in the green hydrogen industry.
  • Act as a focal point for energy export.
  • Serve as a catalyst for domestic hydrogen distribution and use.

This announcement comes off the heels of Crown lands being reserved by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for North Atlantic’s own wind-to-hydrogen project. The 10,316 hectares of land is sufficient to support more than 1 GW of wind power production and generation of approximately 100 kilo tonnes per annum (kTPA) of hydrogen or equivalent.

“We have developed a long-term, sustainable vision for a green hydrogen business that aligns with the Provincial Government’s Hydrogen Development Action Plan, expands our existing fuels importing and distribution capabilities and allows us to maintain and grow our existing customer base,” said Ted Lomond, CEO, North Atlantic. “We value the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s continued support and openness to opportunities that advance our province’s leadership position in clean energy transition.”

In partnership with provincial, regional and Indigenous organizations, North Atlantic has made significant progress on its own wind-to-hydrogen project:

  • April 2023: Initiation of baseline environmental surveys that adhere to the Guidance for Registration of Onshore Wind Energy Generation and Green Hydrogen Production Projects for the purpose of project Environmental Assessment. This work is being executed by SEM Ltd.
  • August 2023: ASL Energy supported the installation process for wind data collection and wind energy assessment in the area around Come by Chance.
  • January 2024: Completion of a Pre-FEED/FEL-2 engineering study for the wind-to-hydrogen project, executed by Hatch Ltd.

North Atlantic will continue project development activities into 2025, including survey and geotechnical campaigns for the wind power, transmission line and hydrogen plant sites, and a FEED/FEL-3 engineering study all in support of the Environmental Assessment Process and a final investment decision (FID) in 2025. In addition, North Atlantic will undertake several capital projects to modernize its port facilities for export of hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives.

“Coupling the world class wind resource in the Placentia Bay area with our existing infrastructure in Come By Chance creates an opportunity for North Atlantic to manufacture some of the most cost competitive green hydrogen on the planet,” said Lomond. “Our existing infrastructure lends itself not only to ammonia export, but to the utilization of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs) as a means of hydrogen export, and the creation of a domestic hydrogen distribution network.”

North Atlantic’s vision for Newfoundland and Labrador’s green energy industry extends beyond a single project. With the development of its Green Energy Hub, the company is positioned to help the province and country move to a more sustainable future.
