Expert Advice

Picking the Right Size Mini-Split

A properly sized mini-split is essential for optimal performance. The BTU rating of the unit should be selected based on the size of the room. Mini-splits can range from as low as 6,000 BTUs to as high as 56,000 BTUs. When choosing a mini-split, it’s important to note that the heating capacity of the unit should be slightly higher than its cooling capacity to ensure efficient operation.

Undersized

A mini-split that is too small will result in inefficient performance and an uncomfortable home environment. The unit will run continuously but won’t be able to adequately cool or heat the intended space, creating hot and cold spots – and wasted energy. An undersized ductless mini-split also works harder and longer to compensate for its inadequacy, which will lead to higher utility bills, and cause your unit to wear out faster than it should.

Oversized

A bigger unit isn’t necessarily better – for a few reasons. Firstly, larger units typically cost more, eating into any energy savings you might achieve later. Secondly, an oversized mini-split will lead to “short cycling”, where the unit repeatedly turns on and off in a short period, leading to faster wear and tear, and increasing the chance of malfunctions and premature failure. Lastly, your mini-split also functions as a dehumidifier, and an oversized mini-split that short cycles cannot remove humidity properly. Your home will feel cool but humid and damp as a result.

By selecting the right size mini-split heat pump for your specific needs, you can ensure optimal efficiency, comfort, and longevity of the system.

FAQs

Mini-splits are heat pumps that transfer thermal energy (heat) from one area to another. In winter, they extract heat from outdoor air to warm your home. In summer, the process can be reversed to keep your home cool.

Yes, mini-splits work in cold weather. Even when the air outdoors feels cold to us, it still contains large amounts of thermal energy that can be used to heat your home. Efficiency can be impacted in very extreme cold, but we have very few days that get that cold here in Atlantic Canada. All the same, it is always advisable to have a backup heat source that will give your home that little boost of warmth when the mercury plummets.

It’s never a good idea to cover your mini-split’s external unit with a tarp or any other material, even in the winter months. Heat pumps require clear airflow for optimal performance and covering them greatly reduced their efficiency. However, it is important to keep them clear of accumulated snow or ice. North Atlantic offers snow shelters that meet manufacturer requirements.

Yes, mini-splits are better for the environment than other methods of home heating. They are very efficient and reduce energy consumption compared to other heating solutions. Plus, they help to lower emissions, even if your electricity comes from fossil fuels. If you have your own solar panels or get electricity from other clean energy sources, that makes heat pumps even better for the environment.

Yes, in most cases, switching to a mini-split can lead to significant cost savings. The exact numbers will depend on factors like the construction and layout of your home, your existing heating solution, and how you use your current heating system.

If you have read that mini-splits may not do enough to keep homes cool during the summer months, be thankful that you live in Atlantic Canada! At the temperatures we see, mini-splits are perfectly effective for both heating and cooling, making them suitable as a single solution for year-round comfort.

Mini-splits are relatively robust pieces of equipment. Some basic maintenance combined with occasional servicing from our HVAC experts should keep your mini-split functioning at peak efficiency for years. For best results, we recommend scheduling annual maintenance with our trained professionals to help catch any issues before they cause trouble.

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) measures the efficiency of a mini-split’s heating performance over a heating season. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit.

COP (Coefficient of Performance) measures the energy efficiency of an air-conditioning unit’s heating capacity in relation to its electrical input.
