Redefining our relationship with the environment - Doing more than required, sooner than we have to.
We live in one of the world’s most pristine environments. Newfoundland and Labrador is an eco-tourist’s dream surrounded and inhabited by some of the world’s most accessible seabird sanctuaries, vegetation found nowhere else on the planet, and people who deeply love this part of the world. It’s not the most hospitable place for an oil refinery, but our neighbours would be happy to have an elbows-on-the-fence conversation about the good work we’ve done preserving the environment.
Every day, we work to improve our own energy efficiency which, in turn, reduces greenhouse gases. As well, we’ve never had a significant oil spill. This is testament to our oil-spill prevention and training programs that include the use of state-of-the-art equipment, and tanker and pilot escorts through beautiful Placentia Bay. We are very serious about the protection of Placentia Bay and we expect all others occupying this 'far greater bay' to also give it the respect it demands.
North Atlantic has significantly cut all emissions from its refinery in particular, we’ve cut sulphur emissions by 85% - an ever-growing percentage. We’ve invested heavily in protecting the land and air and water quality. The sulphur we recover from our operation is exported around the world for pharmaceutical and fertilizer uses.
We test and monitor the environment every day with the vigilance it deserves, and then we do it again. Our responsiveness to any environmental issue, as rarely as it comes up, is swift. It’s part of being a good neighbour.
Clean fuels and the environment.
We were ahead of the clean-fuel curve long before new world regulations. In fact, we've been producing clean, low-sulphur gasoline for years. And, we've been selling it in California where they have the world's toughest clean fuel requirements. Similarly, our home heating fuel, jet fuel, and ultra-low-sulfer diesel are among the best-of-the-best in the world of refined petroleum products.
